Cllr Ravi Govindia, Leader, Wandsworth Council
"A bridge specifically designed to carry pedestrians and cyclists will be a first for central London. The design also has to win hearts and minds so form is just as important as function. This bridge will be a valuable additional to our transport network as well as a thing of beauty that is worthy of its location at the centre of a world city"
The Design Team’s appointment follows an international competition to deliver a landmark design for a functional cycling and pedestrian bridge. While there is a winning Design Team, there is not yet a final design or location. Any final design will need to meet the following challenges set out by the project sponsors:
The bridge must rise high enough above the banks to allow the passage of river traffic below without creating a slope too steep for cyclists and wheelchair users.
While the bridge will not be open to cars, taxis, lorries, buses or other forms of vehicular transport, it will provide multi-modal use for cyclists, pedestrians and other non-vehicular modes of transport all of whom must be able to travel safely in both directions.
The landing points on each side must have a minimal impact on valuable space and should enhance the public realm. There is not currently a fixed location.
